In 1969 a biker friend, who lived near me and was in the same AMA Motorcycle club called and said: "Let's go in the motorcycle business." We each got $1000, rented a small building in Huntsville Alabama, and started buying and selling used motorcycles. We called our store Cycle Exchange. John later moved to Orlando Florida because he had a grass mowing contract with Martin Marietta there. John is now a Harley Davidson dealer.
I continued the business on afternoons and Saturdays. Several friends at Northrop Space Laps where I workded came up with money to invest in more used bikes. Also we were able to take on the Benelli, Hodaka, and Clymer Indian lines of new motorcycles. In 1972 the people who owned Precision Cycles in Decatur dropped Suzuki, Triumph, Kawasaki, and Yamaha. They built a new facility on Hwy.67 and only sold Honda. With the financial help of my friends at Northrop, I was able to get the Suzuki and Triumph lines in Decatur.
I then rented a 100 year old building for $150 a month in Old Decatur, quit my job at Northrop and became a full time motorcycle dealer on February 1, 1972. We had one mechanic, one parts man, and myself. I did all sales, paper work, cleaning and helping in parts. In 1977, I was able to get the Kawasaki franchise. In 1985 Honda of Decatur (Precision Cycle Inc.) wanted out of the motorcycle business so bad that they sold building, land, bikes, parts and equipment to me with no down payment.
In 1986, our bank financed a new warehouse to be attached to the existing 8,000 sq. ft. Honda building. This gave us 14,000 sq.ft. and we were able to combine everything into this building. Things looked good until the end of 1987. Then the U.S.Safety Commission told the World how dangerous three and four wheelers were. Our sales dropped 52% in 1988. There was no way that I could stay in business because all my inventory was financed and I was making building payments also, I prayed to Jesus for a solution and on June 21, 1989, a stranger from another town came in and gave me a message from the Lord. I followed the message and through other blessings for 2 1/2 years, I was able to stay in business.
In January of 1992, the Lord started sending used motorcycles to us for consignment sales and selling what used bikes we had. We had about fifteen used bikes at that time. Again my friends and the bank started helping us to buy used motorcycles. By the end of 1992 we had sold 265 used motorcycles, The used bike sales continued to increase until 1995 when we sold 370 used bikes. I considered this to be a real Blessing from God, because I never have and never will advertised that I buy used motorcycles. My supplier, Jesus Christ, owns all the motorcycles in the world and supplies what I need.
I continue to pray for my customers and my motorcycles to come from the north, south, east, and west. The Lord is allowing us to sell more new motorcycles and less used now. If and when He quits sending used bikes, I am sure He will increase our new sales to meet our financial needs. Cycles Unlimited started with three people in 1972 and now we have 12 people. We try to be a blessing to our customers and provide good employment for our people.
Our General Manager is Pamela Porter. Pam started with us over 15 years ago. She was a manager in my absence, but when I became a City Councilman, I assigned and she accepted the position of General Manager.
I turned 72 in August. I ride as my primary bike a Kawasaki ZX1400. I drag race this bike at the local drag strip. Also, I do enter a few AMA Prostar events each year. I have won several National events; World Finals in Gainesville, FL, Rebel Nationals at Atlanta Dragway, PBG Nationals at Columbus, Ohio and Montgomery Motorsport Nationals in Montgomery, AL. I always ride my bike to these events and I believe I am the oldest racer at each event.
